Tablets & Capsules

Tablets & Capsules

When you prescribe medications, it is essential that they are taken exactly as prescribed to ensure patient safety and the effectiveness of your treatment plan. As a compounding pharmacy, PetScript is proud to provide pet meds in a variety of forms, making it easier than ever for pet owners to follow your directions regarding medication administration. Two of the most popular forms chosen for pet meds include tablets and capsules.

What's the Difference Between a Tablet and a Capsule?

Tablets

A tablet is the most traditional form of medication dosing. Tablets contain medications that are tightly packed into solid pills that are administered orally. Tablets are usually round in shape, and they can be scored or unscored, making them easier to break apart for more exact dosing. Tablets from PetScript can be compounded to meet your exact prescription specifications.

Capsules

Capsules are cylinder-shaped containers that are made from a dissolvable gel material. The gel capsule contains medication which is usually in a jelly or powder form. Capsules cannot be divided into pieces the way that tablets can. However, they are usually recommended for medications that have a bitter or strong taste because the gel capsules mask the unpleasant flavors, making it easier to administer to animals – even with their powerful olfactory senses.

The Benefits of Prescribing Tablets or Capsules

Our compounding pharmacists use tablets and capsules to create custom dosages and mixes that simplify the process of administering medications to animals. Some of the advantages of tablets and capsules include:

Custom Dosage - Certain tablets are only available in particular doses. So, for example, if you have prescribed your patient 3mg of a medication that is only available in 5mg tablets, we can create capsules that contain the exact right amount. Or if you have prescribed 5mg of a medication that's available in 10mg tablets, we can add scoring that enables pet owners to easily split their pets’ medications into the proper doses.

Custom Mix - If a patient has been prescribed multiple medications that are okay to take at the same time, we can mix both medications into a single capsule for easier administration.

Color-Coded Capsules - Additionally, we can even customize the color of your patients’ capsules so that pet owners can more easily distinguish between different prescriptions or even prescriptions for different pets living in their households.
